Since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, militaries have increasingly adopted Starlink services for critical operations such as communication and drone control. In a significant development, SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell revealed in 2023 that the company had taken steps to limit Ukraine's military use of Starlink for offensive purposes only. Meanwhile, SpaceX has also been working to prevent unauthorized Russian troop access to Starlink in Ukraine.
The Ukrainian Defence Ministry declined to provide information about its potential use of Starshield technology.
As of spring last year, the UK government disclosed that approximately 1,000 Starlink terminals were already in use by British military forces since July 2022, according to its official reply in May 2025.
The extent of Britain's military reliance on Starshield remains ambiguous, while its financial commitment to this technology is also shrouded in uncertainty. Sources indicate that procurement costs are marginally greater than those for Starlink.
A Ministry insider revealed that a directive was issued to divert operational communications to Starshield, but declined to disclose who initiated this transition.
