Indonesian authorities have taken officials into custody following a high-profile raid on government agencies. The move comes amid growing concerns about the programme's management practices.

On Wednesday, a high-profile arrest was made in Indonesia, targeting three former officials, including the recently ousted leader of a key government agency responsible for President Prabowo Subianto's flagship free meals initiative.

Dadan Hindayana, ex-chief of the National Nutrition Agency, was apprehended by Indonesia's Attorney General's Office within a day of his dismissal by Prabowo, on allegations of embezzlement and self-enrichment that could result in up to 20 years' imprisonment if proven.

Indonesian official Dadan was led out of the AGO building in handcuffs, clad in a bright pink vest, amidst a swarm of reporters clamoring for access to him.

Prabowo's presidential campaign relied heavily on his ambitious plan for a free meals program, which was set to be funded by a substantial allocation of at least $15 billion from the government's budget in 2024. This initiative aimed to benefit approximately 83 million children and pregnant women across Indonesia.

An AGO official, Syarief Sulaeman Nahdi, disclosed to media representatives that Dadan had been designated as a suspect in a corruption investigation tied to the administration of the free meal initiative.

Syarief claimed Dadan exerted undue influence over the selection process for several foundations overseeing the program's kitchen operations, despite their failure to meet established standards, which were allegedly controlled by external entities on his behalf.

Allegations against him also involve the inflated purchase of goods such as over 21,000 electric motorbikes, 32,000 pairs of footwear, and 5,400 television sets.

Syarief revealed that two additional former officials from the agency are facing charges related to the same corruption allegations. Meanwhile, the government is still assessing the full scope of financial losses incurred.

Efforts to reach lawyers representing the accused officials were unsuccessful due to unavailability. Dadan remained silent on the matter, declining to provide a statement in response to inquiries.

Following the arrests, the agency stated its commitment to allowing the judicial process to unfold while ensuring the free meal program operates with integrity and transparency.

In a recent address, Prabowo mentioned hearing about alleged misconduct within the agency during a nutrition event on Thursday, though he chose not to elaborate further, citing concerns about interfering with the ongoing investigation into the arrested officials' involvement.

He revealed that his actions were driven by a painful necessity, replacing those close to him with questionable motives.

Prasetyo Hadi, state secretary, revealed that Dadan's dismissal stemmed from issues with governance and food safety standards.

Undercover investigators from AGO descended upon their headquarters early Wednesday morning, arriving in several vehicles around 2 a.m., an hour after midnight.

Employees were barred from entering the premises on Wednesday afternoon as the building remained in a state of lockdown.

The office and residences of suspects were indeed subject to a thorough search operation, corroborated by Syarief himself. This dramatic event unfolded on the second level of the premises, an area housing the organization's key decision-makers.

Investors are scrutinizing the free meals program intensely since its inception in January 2025, primarily due to concerns over Prabowo's large-scale expenditures potentially breaching fiscal deficit limits.

Despite mounting worries, Prabowo vows to press on with the initiative.

Nanik Sudaryati Deyang, a former journalist, has been appointed to replace Dadan as entomologist, having previously worked with Prabowo's campaign team in the 2024 election.

Cases of food poisoning have been associated with the school meals program, impacting an estimated 33,000 children by April, as reported by Network for Education Watch, a reputable non-profit organization.
