The renewed cease-fire agreement's success hinges on Hezbollah's cooperation, as this Iran-backed militant group continues its fight against Israel. Notably, Hezbollah operates independently from the Lebanese government, which is not directly involved in these negotiations with the United States or Israel.

The agreement's success hinges on two key conditions: a total halt in Hezbollah's firing and the removal of all Hezbollah operatives from the South Litani Sector, which spans southern Lebanon along its border with Israel. Israeli forces have maintained control over this region since hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel resumed.

Tensions between Israel and Lebanon intensified as Hezbollah launched rocket attacks across the border into northern Israel on March 1, coinciding with US-Israeli strikes against Iran. The escalation prompted Israel to unleash a barrage of artillery fire at Hezbollah strongholds in Beirut and its surrounding areas, while ground troops advanced into southern Lebanon.

US State Department confirmation followed high-level meetings between Israeli and Lebanese officials in Washington on Tuesday and Wednesday, facilitated by US mediation. The deal stipulates that designated areas will be under sole Lebanese military jurisdiction, excluding non-state entities from participating.

Peace negotiations between Israel and Hezbollah have been hindered by ongoing conflict. Tehran insists that any peace accord must involve Lebanon's participation. In a recent address to his countrymen, Naim Qassem expressed enthusiasm for an Iran-U.S. agreement incorporating a Lebanese ceasefire, but expressed reservations about direct Israeli-Lebanese talks.

A U.S.-brokered cease-fire went into effect in Lebanon during April, yet skirmishes persist, testing its limits. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has intensified his verbal attacks on Hezbollah despite ongoing negotiations for a truce with Lebanon and separate talks between Iran and the United States.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reaffirmed his country's stance on Hezbollah, stating that Israel is engaged in a state of conflict with the militant organization. The renewed tensions come as Hezbollah employed advanced drone technology to target Israeli military personnel and leaders during recent clashes. Domestic opposition to concessions to Hezbollah has been mounting, despite the group's aggressive tactics being well-documented through its social media channels.

Netanyahu's earlier ultimatum to bomb Beirut was swiftly retracted following a pledge by Iran to disengage from US negotiations, paving the way for President Trump to revive the Lebanese cease-fire agreement.

Israel's national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, urged Prime Minister Netanyahu to disregard appeals for restraint, instead taking decisive action against Hezbollah, freeing Israeli forces to operate effectively.

A joint declaration from the United States, Lebanon, and Israel reaffirms that Israel and Lebanon's future ties should be determined solely by their respective governments. It also strongly opposes any efforts by external entities to dictate Lebanon's destiny.

Lebanon's government and military have long struggled to disarm Hezbollah and assert their authority nationwide consistently.

The conflict between Hezbollah and Israel has resulted in over 3,200 casualties among Lebanese citizens and at least 30 fatalities among Israeli nationals so far.

On Wednesday, a joint statement was released detailing key points from talks between Israeli and Lebanese delegations, which centered around establishing a security framework that involves disarming militant groups in Lebanon.

The two nations reaffirm their commitment to peaceful intentions, pledging to maintain dialogue and address all pending matters through ongoing direct negotiations towards a mutually beneficial agreement.

Representatives from both countries are set to meet again on June 22.
