Lilly has secured exclusive access to Ascidian's proprietary RNA exon-editing tech, which enables precise gene correction without irreversibly modifying a patient's genetic code for specific unannounced kidney disease applications. This innovative approach targets faulty genes directly.

Lilly's expansion into genetic medicine has been marked by significant investments over the past year, notably a $1.13 billion deal for Verve Therapeutics and collaborations with Profluent and Seamless Therapeutics in Germany.

Lilly has granted Ascidian a license worth up to $1.9 billion, comprising an initial payment plus additional sums linked to specific targets in research, approvals and revenue growth.

According to Daniel Rosan, Ascidian's chief business officer, their gene-editing technology combines the benefits of CRISPR and DNA editing with a crucial distinction: it modifies RNA rather than altering patients' DNA directly.

The CRISPR gene-editing technique has earned a Nobel Prize for its innovative approach to correcting genetic flaws by excising defective segments and reintroducing healthy DNA sequences.

Lilly has partnered with Ascidian for gene-editing technology licensing, with the latter overseeing initial research and preclinical endeavors. Meanwhile, Lilly will assume responsibility for further development, production and market distribution.

Ascidian's partnership with Lilly brings together their genetic medicine know-how to tackle the significant challenges posed by genetic kidney disease head-on.

As of 2024, Ascidian's gene-editing tech was already under license with Roche (ROPC.S) for developing novel treatments in neurology.
