Linux has become even more appealing thanks to Docker, a tool that leverages open-source containers, making them an ideal choice for my workflow due to their efficiency and ease of use.

Experimenting with various Docker containers has significantly improved my daily efficiency and streamlined tasks such as feed updates and data handling.

My workflow has been transformed by the consistent inclusion of four relatively unknown Docker containers.

03Papermerge

Document management tool with built-in optical scanning.

Papermerge, a document management tool, streamlines organizational chaos by providing a structured system to maintain order. With a basic setup in place, I created a YAML file and utilized Docker Compose Up to run it, specifying port 8000 for this instance. This straightforward process is consistent across all apps on the list that utilize Docker Compose.

Documents scattered across multiple drives can be overwhelming. Papermerge offers an efficient solution as an open-source document manager that incorporates password protection and OCR functionality to streamline organizational tasks effectively. This digital system helps maintain order in a cluttered digital environment.

Papermerge excels as a document management tool with built-in optical scanning capabilities. It effortlessly digitizes various paper-based items, including receipts, bills, notices, tax documents, manuals, and even handwritten notes from comic books.

09Actual Budget

Spreadsheets are no longer necessary with this tool.

Spreadsheets held my attention for quite some time. I applied them extensively, often experimenting with innovative layouts. However upon discovering Actual Budget, I discovered it surpassed any spreadsheet I'd created as a budgeting and accounting solution. The YAML file from the Actual Budget repository was easily imported into nano, and configuring the container to port 5006 allowed me to begin working efficiently within minutes.

The initial impression was one of simplicity and ease of use. A budget began to take shape in the Budget tab, with a starting figure of $300 allocated for this trial period. However future adjustments will be necessary as needs evolve. Payees were listed and due dates, along with corresponding amounts, were entered. In short order, a comprehensive visual representation of the upcoming week's budget emerged. This graphical layout facilitates identification of potential gaps or areas where expenses can be trimmed.

The Reports tab in Actual Budget offers a clear picture of financial missteps, providing valuable insights into areas that need improvement. Daily use of the tool allows me to monitor budget status closely, with automatic fund allocation on designated paydays. This streamlined approach makes it easy to stay on top of finances without incurring additional costs, as Actual Budget remains free from subscription fees. Its lightweight design prioritizes user privacy, making it a standout among daily-use Docker containers.

19Wallabag

Docker containers simplify app management processes.

I've grown accustomed to alternatives since Pocket's decline. Instapaper falls short for me now, and relying solely on RSS feeds has limitations. Wallabag is another self-hosting tool I've incorporated. I configured it on port 8082 and customized the YAML file to my preferences. Adding a link involves clicking the plus sign at the top of the app and pasting the URL into the designated field.

Your library is instantly enriched in mere seconds. Published content, including my own work, was successfully stored by Wallabag with minimal issues. A notable exception was a listicle written several years back, which presented some saving difficulties. Additional links from diverse publishers were seamlessly integrated into the collection, demonstrating the tool's versatility and functionality.

Using Wallabag is reminiscent of Pocket's earlier functionality. I've found myself relying more heavily on Wallabag than any other Docker container I've tried. The Chrome and Firefox extensions are also available, allowing seamless integration with the app. To utilize these extensions, simply create an API token within Wallabag, then combine it with your login credentials to enable saving from anywhere you browse online. This feature brings Wallabag's capabilities on par with Pocket's former strengths.

App reading is a straightforward process, much like one would expect from an article-saving app. However full text capture isn't always guaranteed, as evidenced by my attempt to save a lengthy Ranker listicle, which only captured the initial page. As someone who regularly saves numerous articles for later reading, Wallabag has proven to be a useful tool in recent times.

26Excalidraw

Interactive digital sketchpad software.

A browser-based whiteboard offers a distinctive canvas for creativity and collaboration. This versatile tool has become an indispensable asset for my note-taking and project planning needs. Its utility extends to more intricate projects, such as designing interactive web pages like the Choose Your Own Adventure feature for my songwriting initiative. Unlike heavy vector tools or paint programs, Excalidraw boasts rapid loading times of just a few seconds.

For tasks requiring vivid visuals or brainstorming sessions, Excalidraw has proven to be an excellent choice. Beyond its creative applications, I've been utilizing it regularly for outlining articles and fleshing out ideas. The software's simplicity allows me to focus on the concept rather than worrying about pixel-perfection or switching between art supplies.

A hobby emerged from an initial interest in online news feeds.

My journey with Docker started innocently enough - experimenting with Fresh RSS - but soon led to discovering a wealth of lesser-known utilities.

Exploring Docker has sparked a desire to discover novel applications, with the goal of evaluating uncharted container options in upcoming home laboratory endeavors.
