Owning a Pixel 10 Pro without discovering its full capabilities is a common oversight. Fortunately, I've learned the settings adjustments that unlock its potential and will share this knowledge with you now.

03Quick Tap

Tap the back of your Pixel to open apps and initiate various actions.

Months passed before I stumbled upon Quick Tap's existence through an obscure Reddit post. Upon discovering its capabilities, I enabled it and was amazed at how swiftly it rose to become a staple feature on my Pixel device.

Quick Tap enables rapid access to phone functions by tapping the back twice. This gesture can launch any app, including specific menus within certain apps. For instance, users can bypass main screens to directly access features like the Wall of the Day in Backdrops or Wi-Fi settings. I utilize Quick Tap to swiftly open my bank's wallet app and capture screenshots for articles, such as this one, with ease.

To activate Quick Tap, navigate to Settings and then System, where you'll find Gestures with an option for Quick Tap actions. For optimal results, aim for the lower third of your phone's back when tapping, rather than the marked spot near the Google logo, which can be inconsistent by design.

14Comfort View

Reduced Eye Strain

I frequently utilize Comfort View, which employs a screen filter to subtly reduce color intensity, presenting a soft and calming visual experience.

Upon waking up, I ensure that this feature is activated and remains on throughout the day unless I'm engaging in activities such as taking photos or watching videos. This setting significantly minimizes eye strain caused by prolonged screen time on my Pixel device. Interestingly, its effectiveness is particularly noticeable at night when combined with Night Light, a blue light filter developed by Google. Unfortunately, this feature went largely unnoticed by many Pixel owners due to being introduced in the March Pixel Drop update, which is unfortunate because it offers considerable benefits for individuals who experience dry eyes.

To minimize eye fatigue, navigate to Settings and select Display & touch, then Comfort Filters. If you're prone to eye strain, consider disabling Dynamic Adjustment and maximizing the intensity slider's range. Additionally, enabling a higher 480Hz display flicker rate under Accessibility > Adjust brightness for sensitive eyes can also alleviate eye discomfort, particularly when viewing OLED displays that tend to tire the eyes quickly.

32Live Caption

Live captions are now available on all Pixel videos.

Pixel devices now feature Live Caption functionality, which provides automatic captioning for videos playing on the device, unless captions are already turned on. When watching content with captions disabled, such as YouTube videos, Live Caption seamlessly activates and remains discreet when captions are enabled from the start.

While browsing Reddit with muted videos, live captions on Pixel videos prove particularly useful for gauging unfolding events without disrupting the audio. This feature comes in handy during late-night scrolling sessions when others are trying to rest nearby.

To access Live Caption, navigate to Settings > Accessibility > Live Caption. However turning it on by default can be inconvenient, as it will automatically activate for any video without captions that contains dialogue. To avoid this, toggle the Live Caption in volume control switch, which adds a convenient button to the volume controls. Pressing a volume button and activating it only when needed is a more practical approach.

42Auto Best Take

Pixel users often miss key settings tweaks.

When capturing portraits, photographers can greatly benefit from Auto Best Take's capabilities. This feature synergizes seamlessly with Top Shot to record numerous shots, allowing for the selection of the most flattering expression in one cohesive image.

To access the setting, navigate to the Camera app and locate the gear icon in the bottom-left corner. Tap on this icon to ensure that Top Shot is set to Auto, a prerequisite for Auto Best Take functionality. Then open the three-dot menu and look for the toggle that enables Auto Best Take.

49Pixel Vibration Settings

Ensure notifications don't go unnoticed on silent mode.

When using silent mode, notifications can easily slip under the radar due to insufficient vibration intensity. A feature like Adaptive Vibration helps rectify this issue by amplifying vibrations in situations where they're likely to go unnoticed, such as when a phone is stored in a pocket or bag, or amidst background noise from music. This tweak can be particularly beneficial for frequent vibrate users.

To customize notification settings on silent mode, navigate to Settings, followed by Sound & vibration > Vibration & haptics, where you can adjust Adaptive Vibration preferences. Additionally, consider enabling gradual ring, which starts with a phone vibrating before increasing the ringtone volume as you respond to incoming calls.

Pixels come loaded with numerous features, many of which remain hidden by default.

Google's Pixel phones have been packed with numerous valuable features, yet many remain underutilized due to their default inactivity. Users must actively seek out these hidden gems to unlock their full potential, often requiring deliberate effort to access the benefits they provide.

Three months into owning my first Pixel phone, I've only scratched the surface of its capabilities, with many hidden gems waiting to be uncovered, a prospect that's even more exciting with Android 17 on the horizon now.
