If you've invested in Samsung's ecosystem over time, it's likely you're sitting on at least one Galaxy Watch that could use new life. Fortunately, repurposing an older model is a more feasible and cost-effective option than upgrading a phone. It's time to think outside the box with these retired smartwatches.

01Repurpose old Galaxy Watch as desktop timer.

Time-blocking schedule display feature.

Visual learners often find it easier to manage their time with tangible tools rather than digital ones. Apps can be easily overlooked when hidden in a crowded phone pocket or buried beneath multiple open windows on a computer screen. A vintage Galaxy Watch offers an attractive middle ground between physical and virtual scheduling methods.

With a Pomodoro app at your fingertips and a physical clock nearby, you have the ultimate productivity combo. To replicate this setup, simply download an app like Pomo Do and configure your Galaxy Watch to remain on even when it's plugged in for charging, all thanks to Developer Mode and its "Stay awake while charging" feature.

07Repurpose old Galaxy Watch as Spotify remote.

Repurpose old watch as party controller.

Spotify's seamless feature, "Connect," operates quietly in the background. This unobtrusive functionality enables users to manage their music playlists on a PC from their mobile device, specifically applicable here is controlling playback from a Galaxy Watch.

Transforming an old Galaxy Watch into a versatile party controller is a great idea, especially when it comes to sharing music with others. To unlock this feature, navigate to Settings and enable "Auto launch media controls" under Advanced features. Once Spotify is cast to your home speakers, the watch seamlessly takes over as a remote control for effortless music management.

18Repurposed Wearable Device

Protect your phone from potential damage.

Creating a makeshift Android Auto display on my bike using an old phone was an experiment gone slightly awry. Fortunately, I've since opted for a more practical solution: repurposing an older Galaxy Watch, which pairs perfectly with the Ride with GPS app.

Connecting a Galaxy Watch to a bike ride poses operational challenges if you're also wearing another Samsung device on your wrist. The system allows two watches to link with a phone, but only one can be in use at any given time. To resolve this issue, consider using a non-Samsung watch or configuring the old watch for offline maps and settings before switching back to the current device.

Convenient controls in a compact size.

Home automation fans often prefer intuitive interfaces, and I'm no exception to this rule. Tablets like iPads and Android devices offer straightforward usability, yet e-paper technology has recently gained significant attention. A compact alternative could be the Galaxy Watch for a tailored control experience.

Galaxy Watch owners can tap into various smart home platforms via Wear OS apps. These include prominent names like Home Assistant, Google Home and Samsung's SmartThings. To turn the watch into a convenient control center, users should create a customized watch face with shortcuts to their preferred smart home services. For instance, I set up Analog Dashboard with quick access to my Google Home and SmartThings controls: temperature settings, lighting adjustments, routine schedules and Google Home commands.

Pass on legacy to future users.

Galaxy Watches offer a hidden gem in kids mode, enabling users to repurpose their devices as affordable alternatives to fitness trackers like the Fitbit Ace LTE or T-Mobile's SyncUp solution.

Children who are mature enough for basic phone functions but don't require a full smartphone can thrive on devices like this one. Parents have control over their child's Galaxy Watch experience when it's set up in kids mode, thanks to integration with Google Family Link. This allows them to establish time limits and monitor location, among other features. However the watch must be an LTE model for these parental controls to function.

Give new life to discarded gadgets.

While a refurbished Galaxy Watch may not hold the same value as an Android phone or tablet, it's still worth exploring alternative uses if resale or donation isn't feasible. The creative potential for repurposing outdated technology lies largely in one's ability to think outside the box and envision new possibilities.
