Chaos and mayhem reigned supreme at the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix, where drivers' emotions ran high, except for Alex Palou, who remained unruffled as he conquered the 1.645-mile, nine-turn course with a calm demeanor.

Palou dominated from the outset in the #10 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda, claiming the top spot for most of the race with a commanding lead of 71 out of 100 laps. The young driver's composure was put to the test during three pivotal restarts - Lap 71, Lap 75, and Lap 82 - where he skillfully held off Kyle Kirkwood from Andretti Global on the harder primary tire compound.

Palou's championship prospects received a boost as he extended his lead to 62 points over Kirkwood through eight out of eighteen scheduled events.

Graham Rahal's impressive comeback earned him a top spot after a dramatic turn of events. A collision with Kyffin Simpson in Turn 3 on Lap 39 sent him plummeting from the top 10, leaving him in 23rd position at one point. However his #15 Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing Honda still showed significant speed, ultimately propelling him to a season-high third podium finish - a feat he hadn't achieved since 2020.

The rest of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing's lineup had a solid performance, with Louis Foster securing seventh place. Meanwhile, rookie Mick Schumacher initially finished 23rd but was running third with only 30 laps remaining before a fierce battle with David Malukas of Team Penske ended in a collision at the Turn 5 tire barrier.

13Scott Dixon falls short.

Scott Dixon finished second at the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix.

Scott Dixon's disappointment was palpable after a hybrid failure derailed his chances of a strong finish. The six-time IndyCar Series champion had been running steadily within the top 10, having made a notable appearance in the Fast Six this season and securing fourth place on the starting grid. His eventual 24th-place finish marked his second subpar outing outside the top 20 for the year. Notably, it was also his worst result since a 28th-place showing at Portland in 2024.

Christian Lundgaard, Arrow McLaren

Chevrolet faced a daunting challenge over the weekend, with Honda marking its fourth successive victory on home soil. The struggles of the bowtie brigade were compounded by their own mistakes, making every step forward an arduous task.

Engine swaps affected multiple organizations, with Christian Lundgaard's Arrow McLaren undergoing two simultaneous replacements. A total of seven teams made engine changes before the race. The situation escalated to the point where Mark Reuss, Chevrolet General Motors president, publicly confirmed the root cause during the morning warm-up show on FOX Sports 1 as a coating issue.

Pato O'Ward and Christian Lundgaard spearheaded their team's efforts, securing fourth and fifth places among the top ten finishers.

34Josef Newgarden Takes Top Spot.

Josef Newgarden, Team Penske

Josef Newgarden arrived at the track with a visible limp, his left foot encased in a protective boot and a crutch supporting his right arm. Qualifying didn't bode well for him, as he secured 21st position on the grid. However early laps saw him struggling to gain momentum, lagging behind Juncos Hollinger Racing's Sting Ray Robb by a significant 2 seconds. Despite this slow start, Newgarden's team employed clever strategy amidst the chaos of contact between rival cars, briefly propelling him into second place and then holding steady near the tail end of the top 10. Ultimately, he crossed the finish line in tenth position behind the #2 Team Penske Chevrolet, earning himself the 'biggest mover' award.

38Detroit GP Disappoints Some Teams

Andretti Global's IndyCar team excels at the Detroit Grand Prix.

Crew members faced another early morning as part of a four-day stretch of consecutive racing weekends. They were tasked with converting cars from speedway to street course configuration or preparing chassis that had previously competed in the Indy 500. The tight and twisty Detroit circuit, nicknamed the "concrete canyon," added to their workload, with nearly every car experiencing some level of contact - a rare exception being Palou's and Kirkwood's vehicles. After the grueling weekend, mechanics will switch cars back to oval configurations for an upcoming Sunday night event at World Wide Technology Raceway. The team also has testing ahead during the following bye-week.
