SMU's roster is set to gain a new addition with the arrival of former MLB player Adams next season.

As of early Tuesday afternoon, his name wasn't visible on the Mustangs' online player list.

Adams was once touted by 247Sports as a top prospect, earning a coveted five-star ranking eight years prior to his SMU recruitment.

Two standout receivers from his high school days went on to achieve All-Pro status in the NFL: Amon-Ra St. Brown and Ja'Marr Chase, who surpassed him in rankings. Notably, Patrick Surtain II and Micah Parsons also made a strong impression as top 15 recruits in their class.

Former standout athlete Adams opted for baseball over North Carolina after being selected by the Los Angeles Angels with the 17th overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, which came with a lucrative contract worth approximately $3.5 million. This decision marked a turning point in his career trajectory following impressive performances at Green Hope High School in Cary's Raleigh suburb.

Adams' impressive minor league resume boasts an impressive 678 games under his belt, where he maintained a respectable batting average of.245. His power-hitting skills are evident with 55 home runs to his name, complemented by 304 RBIs and 165 stolen bases.

Making his major league debut on August 2, 2023, he quickly established himself as a valuable asset, participating in 17 games that inaugural year. The following season saw him take to the field 11 times for the Angels before transitioning to free agency ahead of the 2025 campaign.

A former MLB player has joined the SMU roster, having previously signed with the Milwaukee Brewers for the 2026 season and being sent to Triple-A Nashville. Released just last month, he opted against seeking a new professional team, choosing college football instead.

The player's minor league performance showed a batting average of.165, with 1 home run and 5 RBIs.

Chris Weinke's path from professional baseball to collegiate football is not an isolated incident; numerous athletes have made similar transitions, with some achieving notable success.
