Over the past two years, I've relied on Samsung DeX as my primary PC substitute. Through this experience, I've gained valuable insights into what makes DeX both fascinating and frustrating as an Android-based desktop solution. Here are five key features that could have streamlined my initial experience with DeX significantly.

01DeX works quite well wirelessly.

Wired connections offer superior performance over wireless alternatives.

When utilizing Samsung DeX, a direct connection between your phone and an external display is the most effective approach. A wired link provides greater stability than its wireless counterpart, which can be prone to interruptions. Despite initial reservations, I discovered that wireless DeX offers a viable alternative, particularly when paired with a lapdock for a laptop-like experience.

Working with a wired connection can be cumbersome, especially when trying to balance a phone and lapdock on your lap. However it's more tolerable on a stable surface like a desk or table. In situations where mobility is key, wireless DeX proved to be a reliable option for tasks like typing and web browsing. In fact, I even relied solely on wireless DeX for extended periods of work without any issues.

Phone age significantly impacts performance. Wireless DeX excelled on my Galaxy Z Fold 6 compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 5. I haven't yet had an opportunity to evaluate the Galaxy Z Fold 7 or the latest Galaxy S26 Ultra, but it's possible that wireless dock connectivity has reached new heights with these newer models.

09External peripherals were largely compatible with DeX.

A simple USB-C adapter would suffice.

Smartphones now often feature a single USB-C port, which can be a blessing or a curse. This lone port leaves users with no spare outlets when connecting an external monitor.

Many people also face this issue with their laptops, which often have limited USB-C ports, forcing them to use a specific USB-C adapter or accessory for connectivity purposes most of the time.

A Samsung phone has surprisingly robust connectivity options. Consequently, a basic USB-C adapter is the most cost-effective way to enhance its capabilities. This simple solution allows for seamless connections to flash drives, HDMI cables, Ethernet ports and full-size SD cards. However it's essential to note that DVD drives are not compatible with this setup.

15Casting wirelessly offers an alternative to carrying tablets.

Having a bigger display on your mobile device.

DeX is often seen as a desktop substitute due to its resemblance to a Windows PC or Chromebook. However combining DeX with a wireless lapdock transforms the experience into something more akin to using a tablet.

When multitasking at home, I often prop up a tablet on a stand to stream videos while doing chores like washing dishes. Using DeX with a lapdock offers the same convenience - simply place it in tent mode on your kitchen counter for wireless video playback. This setup allows me to keep my phone handy as a remote control. Additionally, a lapdock is versatile and can be used for tasks like reading lengthy PDFs or comics on your tablet.

20Samsung DeX offers enhanced gaming capabilities.

Using a PC-like interface can be more efficient.

Realizing the freedom to play mobile games on DeX, I underestimated the magnitude of its efficiency boost. The actual difference in user experience far exceeded my initial expectations significantly.

Internal phone displays boast exceptionally high resolutions, while external monitors often trail behind with lower screen resolution. Lapdocks typically feature 1080p screens, a common trait among many older flatscreen TVs and even some Full HD desktop monitors that are preferred by those who opt out of 4K. This disparity is particularly evident when comparing these devices to our phones' high-resolution displays.

Mobile devices boast impressive graphics capabilities, offering seamless gameplay with crisp resolutions and rapid refresh rates. This performance is preserved when connected to an external display, providing an identical experience to playing directly on the device itself. Beyond this, cloud gaming transforms a smartphone into a full-fledged gaming platform, much like a console.

26Experience augmented reality with Samsung's budget-friendly DeX.

Try out the basics before committing to virtual reality.

Exploring Don't Nod's gaming library with NVIDIA GeForce Now on a virtual display allowed me to test the waters without investing in a pricey XR headset, instead using a Samsung phone paired with AR glasses.

Before investing in virtual reality technology, it's wise to test its waters with a more affordable option: augmented reality glasses paired with your Samsung phone. This setup allows you to utilize your desktop as usual or immerse yourself in high-definition streaming content on a virtual screen. If you find this introduction satisfactory, you can then explore further investment opportunities, such as the premium Samsung Galaxy XR experience.

DeX has its flaws despite several useful features.

My primary computer is no longer a Samsung phone or DeX setup due to several reasons. The experience became unappealing when Google made modifications that couldn't be reversed. One UI 8 update for Samsung DeX was also disappointing, as it eliminated some features and integrated aspects of Google's Android-based desktop, which still lags behind its original version. I'm not enthusiastic about the changes in Googlebooks either. To appreciate DeX's advantages, you don't need to fully commit to it like I did initially.
