Following Mike McCarthy's contract non-renewal after the 2024 season, the Cowboys sought a new head coach. In January 2025, Jerry Jones, owner and general manager, engaged in discussions with Deion Sanders, then at the helm of the Colorado Buffaloes. Although not formally interviewing for the position, Sanders was among those considered before Brian Schottenheimer's promotion from offensive coordinator secured the job.

Jones clarified their discussion with Sanders, stating it was about the team's direction and Sanders' current status. He confirmed speaking with Sanders during the hiring process, emphasizing that many coaches have been in touch with him. Jones assuredly declared that Deion has a job to attend to.

NFL legend Deion Sanders has dismissed rumors linking him to a coaching role at the Dallas Cowboys, despite his impressive career spanning 14 seasons from 1989 to 2005.

Deion Sanders' impressive career culminated with his induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011.

At Colorado, Deion Sanders has accumulated a record of 16-21 over three seasons, marked by notable victories such as 9-4 overall and 7-2 in the Big 12 Conference in 2024. His team is led by standout players Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders.

Their 2025 campaign ended with a disappointing 3-9 record after a promising start.

Winning games and securing educational futures for young players are Deion Sanders' top priorities, allowing them to pursue successful careers beyond their football days. He categorically dismisses any speculation linking him to an NFL coaching role.

Shedeur Sanders' stint with the Cleveland Browns last season culminated in a notable achievement, as he secured the top spot on the NFL Players Association's group licensing income list with a remarkable $17.7 million payout in 2025.

Deion Sanders praised the agreement reached with the National Football League Players Association.

In the same conversation, he touched on the potential for College Football Playoff expansion, noting that many Big 12 Conference coaches back a 16-team format.

Attaining 24 teams in the league would be a welcome development. Sanders expressed enthusiasm about this prospect, calling it tremendous. He believes that with more teams participating, the Big 12 would have been well-represented in last year's playoffs. This would have been ideal for the conference. Currently, they are working towards achieving this goal but its success is uncertain.
