The Ministry of Defence in Britain stated that the shots were a desperate measure to prevent a collision, following failed attempts at communication with the yacht by the Russian frigate Admiral Grigorovich.

Russian officials claimed the warning shots were discharged at a distance of 150 meters, just shy of 165 yards, from the other vessel. A knowledgeable insider estimated the two ships were roughly 457 meters apart or around 500 yards.
