As dawn broke on Monday, electricity began to trickle back into homes that were left in darkness following a weekend of severe weather. The number of affected households peaked at over 100,000.

Unstable atmospheric conditions, driven by a mix of warm, humid air and an advancing weather system, converged over parts of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic on Sunday to spark intense thunderstorm activity.

A swath of severe weather swept across the region on Sunday, impacting areas from New England to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, with parts of the Southeast also affected. Major metropolitan hubs like Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. were within the threat zone, along with Raleigh. The primary concern was the potential for destructive gusts.

Sunday's severe thunderstorm watch covered parts of the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia, with Washington, D.C., included in the alert area. The stormy conditions caused a brief disruption to an event at the White House, where an Ultimate Fighting Championship cage fight was scheduled for that day.

Trees and power lines were toppled by the storms, causing widespread disruptions in multiple states despite relatively minor overall damage. The majority of reported wind damage occurred within specific regions of Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia and Pennsylvania.

As the powerful storms began to dissipate, forecasters anticipated a significant decrease in severe weather threats by Monday morning. Meanwhile, a welcome respite from the previous days' turmoil was predicted for the eastern seaboard, with temperatures and atmospheric conditions stabilizing.
